12 species in full bloom at Valley of Flowers

Tourists were greeted by a floral landscape bathed in a splash of colours as the Valley of Flowers, a UNESCO world heritage site, nestled in the Himalayas in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district was opened for visitors on Wednesday. A total of 75 tourists including one foreigner visited the valley located at a height of over 10,000 feet on the opening day, Divisional Forest Officer Nanda Ballabh Joshi said. Flowers of 12 varieties are in full bloom these days in the valley spread over an area of 87.5 square km where 500 species of flowers grow between June-October, he said. Portals of Hemkund Sahib open for devotees

Portals of the one of the most revered Sikh shrines, Hemkund Sahib, opened in Uttarakhand's Chamoli on Sunday with a cap on the number of devotees that can visit the shrine daily. Located at a height of around 15,200 feet, Hemkund Sahib is linked to tenth Sikh Guru Gobind Singh. A maximum number of 5,000 people can visit the shrine daily this year. The portals of the shrine opened at 10.30 am in the presence of Panj Pyaras . Earlier in the morning, the Guru Granth Sahib was brought to the gurdwara and the opening of shrine portals completed with the recitation of the Sukhmani Sahib. पूर्वोत्तर में नगालैंड व मणिपुर की सीमा पर स्थित डिजुको घाटी के बारे में आपने सुना होगा जो एक बेहद खूबसूरत फूलों की घाटी है। उसी घाटी में एक डिजुको लिली भी खिलता है जो बेहद दुर्लभ है। इस बार मैं आपको पूर्वोत्तर में ही एक और ऐसी जगह लेकर चल रहा हूं जो डिजुको की ही तरह अपने लिली के लिए बेहद प्रसिद्ध है। ये हैं मणिपुर की शिरुई या सिरोय पहाडिय़ों के लिली फूल। शिरुई पहाड़ी पर खिलने की वजह से इसे आम बोलचाल में शिरुई लिली कहा जाता है। यह फूल की एक विदेशी वैरायटी है जो केवल उखरुल जि़ले में ही पाई जाती है। वर्ष 1946 में एक अंग्रेज वनस्पतिशास्त्री फ्रैंक किंगडम वार्ड फूल की इस विशिष्ट किस्म को खोजने वाला प्रथम व्यक्ति था। उसने इसका नाम अपनी पत्नी के नाम पर लिलियम मैकलिनिए रखा था। स्थानीय लोग सिरोय लिली को काशोंगवोन कहते हैं और यह अधिकतर शिरुई काशुग या शिरुई पर्वत पर पाया जाता है। काशोंग यानी पहा...

Goa to develop eco-tourism in forest areas
