43-day annual Amarnath yatra to begin on June 30

The pilgrimage to the Himalayan shrine of Amarnath located at a height of 3,880 metres in south Kashmir will start on June 30 after a two year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 43-day yatra (pilgrimage) will end on August 11, shrine authorities said on Sunday. The decision on the schedule of the pilgrimage was taken at the 41st meeting of the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) chaired by Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha at the Raj Bhavan here, an official spokesman said. The pilgrimage to the cave shrine would start simultaneously from both the routes, the Pahalgam track in Anantnag district and the Baltal track in Ganderbal district, while online registration will start from April 11. Lakhs of olive ridley turtles have begun crowding the tranquil Gahirmatha beach in Odisha, as part of their annual journey to lay eggs, presenting a rare natural phenomenon and a breathtaking sight, officials said. The Gahirmatha beach is widely regarded as the world's largest-known nesting ground of these reptiles. Apart from Gahirmatha, the turtles also arrive at the Rushikulya and Devi river mouths for mass nesting, they said. The 210-km Manali-Sarchu road was re-opened by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) on Saturday, the defence ministry said. It said the opening of the road will provide connectivity to Lahaul district in Himachal Pradesh and it further leads to Leh in Ladakh. Sarchu is of great importance mainly due to its location on the Leh-Manali highway. The road remains closed for over 160-180 days in a year during the winters. Sarchu is located on the boundary between Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh. It is situated between Baralacha La to the south and Lachulung La to the north, at an altitude of 4,290 m (14,070 ft). The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, formerly known as Siraj Bagh, was opened in 2008 by then chief minister of erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state Ghulam Nabi Azad. Assam's Kaziranga National Park received over 2.20 lakh visitors in 2021-22, the highest in the last 12 years, and the revenue earned from tourist footfall surpassed Rs 4 crore, according to official data. The number of foreign tourists visiting this UNESCO World Heritage Site has dipped in the last two years owing to the COVID-19 pandemic and related restrictions. As per data, annual footfall from 2010-11 to 2014-15 ranged from 1 lakh to 1.32 lakh. Between 2015-16 and 2020-21, the number of yearly visitors did not exceed 1.88 lakh. In 2021-22, the park registered as many as 2,20,760 tourists. In terms of revenue, the year 2017-18 recorded maximum earnings at Rs 5,60,66,795. The strategic 434-km Srinagar-Leh national highway was re-opened for vehicular traffic on Saturday in record time of 73 days after its closure in January this year following heavy snowfall, officials said. A trial movement was conducted successfully, and the decision to open the road for civil traffic will be taken after a joint inspection by the civil administration. The highway was thrown open for traffic at the Zojila Pass, situated at an altitude of 11,650 feet metres, by Director General of BRO Lt Gen Rajeev Chaudhary, the officials said.
