Snow leopard declared new state animal in Ladakh

The government of Ladakh has declared snow leopard its state animal and black-necked crane state bird. A notification in this regard was issued Tuesday by the Principal Secretary Forest, Ecology and Environment, Pawan Kotwal. "The Lieutenant Governor of Union Territory of Ladakh is pleased to declare snow leopard (Panther unica) and black necked crane (Grus nicricollis) as state animal and state bird, respectively, of the union rerritory of Ladakh from the date of issue of this notification," Kotwal said in a notification. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday announced reopening of the state's tourism sector from September 1 with relaxations of COVID protocols for travellers. Tourists, who have been fully inoculated, will be allowed to visit Meghalaya, while negative COVID test reports, conducted 72 hours before arrival in the state, will be mandatory for those who received the first dose of vaccines, he said. One will be through the lush green forests and tea gardens of Dooars in north Bengal and another one to scenic destination of Haflong in Assam. Both trains will be run by Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR). Nests of endangered baya weaver birds spotted in Ganjam

Bird watchers are delighted as they have spotted several newly-sprung, intricately-woven nests of the baya weaver in different trees near the mouth of the Rushikulya river in Odisha's Ganjam district. The helmet-shaped nests have been seen hanging from trees, including a palm tree. The nests are the indefatigable effort of the baya weavers, an endangered bird species, to protect the family from predators. "We have found over 100 such nests in a single palm tree at a farm field in Subalaya," said Rabindra Nath Sahu, the honorary wildlife warden for Ganjam. Taj Mahal reopens for night viewing

After remaining closed for over a year for night viewing, the Taj Mahal will open from August 21 for visitors who want to explore the marble monument under moonlight, officials said on Friday. Night viewing of the monument had closed on March 17, 2020 during the first lockdown due to COVID-19. ASI Superintending Archaeologist (Agra Circle) Vasant Kumar Swarnkar said that night viewing will be allowed on August 21, 23 and 24 as the monument is closed every week on Friday and the lockdown is in effect on Sunday.
