Hyperloop, a new form of mass transit involving capsules whizzing on magnetic fields through depressurized tubes, has achieved significant liftoff in the northern Netherlands, a company developing the technology said Monday. A test vehicle was levitated and zipped through a tube at a testing facility for the high-speed transit system once promoted by Elon Musk. “So today, with the first successful test, we were able to levitate the vehicle, also turn on the guidance system and the propulsion system,” Marinus van der Meijs, the technology and engineering director at hyperloop company Hardt, told The Associated Press late last week before Monday’s formal announcement. The European Hyperloop Center’s 420-meter (460-yard) tube is made up of 34 separate sections mostly 2½ meters (...

Contestants from all over the Netherlands gathered in the central village of Polsbroekerdam on Saturday for the yearly national 'fierljeppen' or canal vaulting contest. Over 2,000 people gathered to watch 48 competitors across five categories battle it out for the championship where contestants have to vault the greatest distance across the water using a pole. "Fierljeppen is a really extreme sport," organiser Danny Baas told Reuters. A colourful parade of amphibious cars glided through Amsterdam's canals on Thursday, but it was the last time the event will be held in the city, at least until batteries become lighter. Starting in 2025, access to the city's waterways will be restricted to emission-free vessels and vehicles, a standard too high for amphibious cars due to the weight of electric batteries. "This year is the last time because Amsterdam will (introduce) some new rules," said Dutchman Roy Bolks, organizer of the annual amphibious cars parade that moves countries every year. Read MoreTips from an online travel expert Glenn Fogel I first visited the city in 1983 as a student. Amsterdam is a city of contrasts, which is one of my favorite things about it. It is incredibly international, but geographically small. It’s a tourism hub, but also a center for business and tech in the region. There’s so much happening, but it runs at a more relaxed pace than many other major cities. WHERE TO GO AFTER YOU LAND If I am coming in the early morning from New York, I head to my accommodation and get a workout in – either at the hotel gym or, weather permitting, I’ll run in Vondelpark (Amsterdam-Zuid borough). I like to mix up where I stay. BEST PLACE FOR TEAM MEETINGS The Booking.com headquarters (Oosterdokskade) has some of the best views of Amsterdam, and any ...

Sri Lanka asked the Netherlands to return the artefacts after the Dutch government approved the restitution of historic objects in 2021. The artefacts were taken in 1765 from Kandy, the last kingdom of ancient Sri Lanka, when the Dutch besieged the palace, a statement from the Netherlands embassy said. Read MoreAmsterdam took a first step toward banning large cruise liners under broader plans to reduce mass tourism and pollution, officials said on Friday. Once implemented, the measures adopted by the city council would bring the Dutch capital into line with other high-profile European cities, including Barcelona, Dubrovnik and Venice, that have already cut cruise liner numbers or are considering doing so. The council approved the proposed ban on Thursday. "The motivation ... was to reduce the number of tourists, but also for environmental reasons," city spokesman Wouter Moll said. Like the famous stone circle in southern England, the sanctuary - which was as big as at least three soccer fields and built with soil and wood - was built to align with the sun on the solstices. Read MoreA judge ruled Wednesday that the Dutch government cannot order Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, one of Europe’s busiest aviation hubs, to reduce the number of flights from 500,000 per year to 460,000, dealing a blow to efforts to cut emissions and noise pollution. The ruling came in a summary case brought by airlines and civil aviation organizations led by Dutch carrier KLM that sought to halt the planned cuts unveiled last year.
