"I couldn't sleep," and "my room was too noisy," may be complaints hoteliers dread from guests, but for the Riklin brothers that is the entire point of their latest 'zero star hotel' art installation. The Swiss concept artists' hotel room is essentially a double bed on a platform, with two bedside tables and lamps. There are no walls, ceiling or doors to provide any privacy or shelter. Swiss artist Patrik Riklin, co-founder of the Null-Stern-Hotel (Zero-Star-Hotel) offering guests a choice between four open-air rooms in reaction to the world current state after the pandemic, prepares the Bayart suite in Saillon, Switzerland June 15, 2022. A rare albino Galapagos giant tortoise made its public debut at a Swiss zoo on Friday. Two of the tortoises were born last month at the Tropiquarium in the western town of Servion in Switzerland as part of a programme to preserve the endangered species. REUTERS/Denis Balibouse One is black like its parents and the other is albino. Their gender has yet to be determined. "This is the first time in the world that an albino Galapagos tortoise has been born and kept in captivity. No albino individuals have ever been observed in the wild," the zoo said in a statement. The mother, who weighs more than 100 kilograms...
Read MoreIf you’re coming to Davos this year, try to take the train instead of flying, organizers of the World Economic Forum said. So I did. That meant a 12-hour journey from London to the exclusive gathering in the Swiss Alps, which I’m helping cover for The Associated Press. Taking a train is much less convenient than a plane, but the scenery made up for it — the rolling farm fields of England and France gave way to Switzerland’s towering mountains and idyllic valleys dotted with chalets. And my carbon footprint will be a lot lower than a flight. To many, Davos conjures up images of government leaders, billionaire elites and corporate titans jetting in on carbon-spewing private planes even as the meeting increasingly focuses on climate change. Organizers have been stung by such c...
Read MoreMovers and shakers arriving for the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) this month can pack sandals instead of ski boots for a rare springtime version of the event in Davos, the Swiss ski resort that is Europe’s highest city. In December, organisers postponed the meeting of government, business and other leaders just before its traditional January slot, citing the difficulties of holding an in-person conference during the coronavirus pandemic. REUTERS/Arnd Wiegmann Simply putting on the event after a two-year hiatus is welcome news to locals, who, a 2017 study showed, benefit from a $60 million windfall every time it takes place. “All the people here are very glad that the World Economic F...
Read MoreThe Matterhorn appears as an immovable, massive mountain that has towered over the landscape near Zermatt, Switzerland for thousands of years. A study published in the journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters now shows that this impression is wrong. An international research team has proven that the Matterhorn is instead constantly in motion, swaying gently back and forth about once every two seconds. This subtle vibration with normally imperceptible amplitudes is stimulated by seismic energy in the Earth originating from the world’s oceans, earthquakes, as well as human activity. "The government's goal is to keep as much as possible functioning, of course under different conditions as if there were no pandemic," Berset told a news conference when asked about a French ban on British tourists seeking winter fun. Read MoreIt's a quiet day at Jungfraujoch, the Swiss tourist attraction dubbed "Top of Europe", a mountain saddle connecting two 4,000-metre peaks in the majestic Bernese Alps. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, up to 5,500 people a day would visit Europe's highest railway station at 3,454 metres above sea level. Now the spacious cabins of the new cable car pass the Eiger North Face almost empty. "Last year, the number of visitors dropped by two-thirds to 362,800. We expect a similar number of guests this year," said Kathrin Naegeli, spokesperson for Jungfrau Railways. Over a million people visited Jungfraujoch in 2019, about 70% of them from Asia. Spain, Italy, Philippines, Cambodia impose restrictions on travellers from India, Australia suspends direct flights The first case of the Indian variant of COVID-19 has been confirmed in Switzerland, the Federal Office for Public Health (BAG) said, as other countries introduce travel bans to contain its spread. On the other hand, few more countries including Spain, Italy, Cambodia and Philippines have imposed restrictions on travellers coming from India. Australia has now suspended all direct flights from India until at least May 15.
