Gangotri Temple closes for winters

The portals of the Gangotri Temple here were closed for winters on the occasion of Annakoot-Govardhan Puja on Sunday. The temple gates were shut at 12:15 pm after a puja by priests in the presence of a large number of devotees, Uttarakhand Chardham Devasthanam Board media in-charge Harish Gaud said. After the closure of the temple gates, an idol of goddess Ganga was carried in a palanquin decorated with flowers to Mukhba village where she will be worshipped during winters. The Rudranath temple in the Panch Kedar pilgrimage circuit of Uttarakhand closed for devotees on Saturday in view of the approaching winter during which it remains snowbound. The priests bathed the presiding deity, Shiva, with panchamrit at brahma muhurta (auspicious hour) in the morning and offered special prayers, the temple's chief priest Ved Prakash said. A symbolic image of the deity was then carried in a palanquin decorated with flowers to the Gopinath Temple in Gopeshwar where he will be worshipped during the winter months, he said. Just a day after the new set of rules came into force on Monday, Uttarakhand government further relaxed post-COVID norms for entry of travelers into state, bringing it almost at par to those of neighbouring hill state of Himachal Pradesh. Two important conditions have been done away with in the new notification issued on Tuesday, September 22, 2020. Now there will be no prebooking of minimum two nights required to enter the state. More importantly, no negative COVID-19 test report will be now required. Surkanda Devi temple (five kilometres from Dhanaulti towards Chamba) is best place for a short trip. There is a small uphill trek of around two kilometres for the temple. Temple is located at an altitude of 9995 feet. Surkanda is the most revered deity of the region. It takes around an hour to reach the temple. The trek starts from Kaddukhal village on the main Chamba road. Its an easy to moderate trek. Still there are ponies available for the climb (Rs 400 per person, one way).
