‘Mysterious’ giant sandstone jars found in Assam

Researchers have unearthed 65 giant "mysterious" jars in Assam that may have been used for ancient burial practices. The sandstone jars uncovered by a team led by Tilok Thakuria, from North Eastern Hill University in Meghalaya, and Uttam Bathari, from Gauhati University in Assam vary in shape and decoration. Some of the jars are tall and cylindrical, while others are partly or fully buried in the ground, according to the study published in the Journal of Asian Archaeology. Similar jars, some of which span up to three metres high and two metres wide, have previously been uncovered in Laos and Indonesia, researchers said. Rhino population jumps by 200 at Kaziranga

The population of one-horned rhinoceros at the Kaziranga National Park has registered an increase of 200, taking the total to 2,613, an official said on Tuesday. The four-day rhino census recorded 903 females, 750 males and 170 of undetermined sex in the adult category of above six years. In the sub-adult category of three to six years, 146 females, 116 males and 103 whose sex could not be determined were found. The park's director Jatindra Sarma said 279 rhinos in the juvenile category (one to three years) and 146 calves (less than one year) were also recorded. During the last census in 2018, 2,413 rhinos were recorded. The census was conducted from March 25 to 28, the official said. Kaziranga park sees surge in tourist footfall

Assam's Kaziranga National Park received over 2.20 lakh visitors in 2021-22, the highest in the last 12 years, and the revenue earned from tourist footfall surpassed Rs 4 crore, according to official data. The number of foreign tourists visiting this UNESCO World Heritage Site has dipped in the last two years owing to the COVID-19 pandemic and related restrictions. As per data, annual footfall from 2010-11 to 2014-15 ranged from 1 lakh to 1.32 lakh. Between 2015-16 and 2020-21, the number of yearly visitors did not exceed 1.88 lakh. In 2021-22, the park registered as many as 2,20,760 tourists. In terms of revenue, the year 2017-18 recorded maximum earnings at Rs 5,60,66,795. New vistadome train services to boost tourism in Northeast

Two more vistadome train services were flagged off in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday, aimed at boosting trade and tourism through rail connectivity and promoting the cultural heritage of the northeast. The Orang National Park (ONP) in Darrang and Sonitpur districts of Assam will reopen for tourists on Thursday after remaining closed for several months due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the monsoon, an official said. While, Kaziranga and Manas national parks will reopen on October 1. All COVID-19 protocols and safety guidelines will be followed for the visitors, ONP Divisional Forest Officer Pradipta Baruah said in a notice. Only a portion of the safari route inside the park will be opened for tourists at present due to the poor condition of roads owing to the recent flood, the DFO said. While the tiger population in Assam has increased to 200 in 2021 from 159 in 2018, in Andhra Pradesh it increased from 47 to 63 since the All India Tiger Estimation-2018. Assam got its seventh national park, two within a week, with a notification declaring Dehing-Patkai as so on Wednesday, state Environment and Forest Minister Parimal Suklabaidya said. The Raimona National Park in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) was notified as the sixth such park on the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5. The state now has the second highest number of national parks in the country. Madhya Pradesh and Andaman and Nicobar Islands have nine national parks each, the minister said in a statement.
