Shimla, Vaishno Devi receive first snowfall of the season

Shimla received the first snowfall of the season on Sunday, bringing cheer to tourists who come here in large numbers to celebrate Christmas and New Year. Light snowfall started around 9.15 pm at Mall Road, Jakhu, Chhota Shimla and other areas of the city. The Meteorological Department has predicted rain and snowfall in isolated places of Himachal Pradesh on Monday. Low key turnout for ‘Sani Peyarchi’ festival

A low key turnout due to strict COVID-19 restrictions, was witnessed at the famous shrine of Lord Saturn in Tirunallar in the union territory of Puducherry on Sunday on the occasion of 'Sani Peyarchi' festival. Devotees entering the temple were scanned with thermometers. They were not allowed to take a holy dip in the temple tank. The bells of Lord Saneeswara Temple here rang at 5:22 AM amidst 'Maha Deeparadhanai' and special prayers marking the transit of Lord Saturn. Lingaraj Temple at Bhubaneswar reopened for devotees on Sunday after remaining closed for almost nine months due to COVID-19 pandemic, officials said. Servitors and their family members were allowed entry into the oldest shrine of the state capital on the first day. They will be allowed to pray inside the temple till December 31, while the general public from outside the state capital will be allowed from January 6. The residents of Bhubaneswar can have the darshan of the Lord from January 3. India has added Tso Kar Wetland Complex in Ladakh as its 42nd Ramsar site, which is a second one in the Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh. The Tso Kar Basin is a high-altitude wetland complex, consisting of two principal waterbodies, Startsapuk Tso, a freshwater lake of about 438 hectares to the south, and Tso Kar itself, a hypersaline lake of 1800 hectares to the north, situated in the Changthang region of Ladakh, India. It is called Tso Kar, meaning white lake, because of the white salt efflorescence found on the margins due to the evaporation of highly saline water. Darjeeling toy train will resume services from Christmas with joy rides

Much to the delight of tourists flocking to the hills in the festive season, joy rides of the famed toy train of Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) will resume from Christmas, a Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) official said on Thursday. Three daily joy ride services will be run between Darjeeling and Ghum stations from Friday, the NFR spokesman said from Maligaon. Maharashtra allows water sports, amusement parks to resume

The Maharashtra government has allowed water sports as well as activities like boating and entertainment/amusement parks to resume as part of phase-wise easing of lockdown restrictions in the state. A government circular, dated December 21, said all norms of social distancing and precautions to check the spread of COVID-19 will have to be followed during these activities. It said water sports and other activities like boating will be allowed outside the COVID-19 containment zones.
