Air India has announced that it will stop flights to at least 5 European destinations due to of a drop in passenger demand for these destinations. The national carrier is citing that these routes are no longer financially viable because of the effects of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. On the chopping block are the cities of Madrid, Milan, Copenhagen, Vienna, and Stockholm with immediate effect. On the eve of the World Elephant Day, Wildlife Trust of India released their Conservation Action Report on securing the Thirunelli – Kudrakote elephant corridor. The Thirunelli – Kudrakote Elephant corridor connects the Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary, Karnataka with the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, Kerala and connects a much larger wildlife habitat extending from Bannerghata, Karnataka to Wayanad Sanctuary. WTI’s data shows that pre-relocation of these families, 100% of the corridor resident families faced regular conflicts with wildlife (elephant, wild pig, deer and bonnet macaque). 77 new butterfly species found in Matheran

As many as 77 new species of butterflies have been found in the ecologically sensitive forest of Matheran hill station near Mumbai during a study conducted there over the last eight years, according to the Bombay Natural History Society. With this, the total number of butterfly species in the Matheran forest has now gone up to 140, city-based Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) scientist Mandar Sawant said. Matheran is spread over an area of 214.73 sq km and is located about 80 km from the Maharashtra capital. "The eight-year-long rigorous study undertaken by BNHS from 2011 to 2019 has resulted in the discovery of 77 new species of butterflies in Matheran," the non-governmental research organisation said in a statement. As a run-up to World Elephant Day, Wildlife Trust of India will release their Conservation Action Report on securing the Thirunelli – Kudrakote elephant corridor on Tuesday, 11th August 2020. The Thirunelli – Kudrakote Elephant corridor connects the Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary, Karnataka with the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, Kerala and is vital to the habitat connectivity and survival of about 6500 Asian elephants. This long-term project of WTI commenced with the Kerala Forest Department in 2005 to secure a corridor area that housed five villages covering about 37.3 acres.
