Thailand will allow foreign tourists to visit for longer stays from October, a senior official said on Friday, as the government tries to revive a key economic sector that has been devasted by the coronavirus pandemic. Tourists will have to stay for at least 30 days, with the first 14 days in quarantine in a limited vicinity of their hotel, before they can visit other areas, Tourism Authority of Thailand governor Yuthasak Supasorn told Reuters. The announcement comes after authorities suspended plans to create ‘travel bubbles’ with partner countries as the number of coronavirus cases in Asia rose. “On Oct. 1 we will start in Phuket,” Yuthasak said. Visitors will have to take two coronavirus tests during quarantine before they are able to travel to the rest of the island, M...

Indonesia is reviewing a plan to reopen its tourist areas to foreign visitors, which could stall Bali’s planned to welcome back foreigners next month. Now it is also being reported that Indonesia will keep its doors closed to tourists until a coronavirus vaccine is found and immunity can be provided. “The reopening of tourist destinations to foreign tourists is something positive, but we need to do it at the right time,” Erick Thohir, chief of Indonesia’s national economic and COVID-19 recovery team, said during a virtual public discussion. Read MoreThe global travel and tourism industry is among the worst hit due to COVID-19 pandemic and deal activity in the sector is muted. Japan too is not an exception, though the country seems to be keen on reviving the industry by introducing new initiatives. However, with the resurgence of new COVID-19 cases and mixed response amid criticism and concerns over second wave of infections, deal making sentiment is expected to remain subdued for some more months, says GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company. An analysis of GlobalData’s Financial Deals Database reveals that the number of deals announced in the Japanese travel and tourism industry decreased by more than 50% in Q2 2020 compared to Q1. In a bid to revive COVID-19 battered domestic tourism industry, Japan rolled out a travel ...
Read MoreEurope continues to be getting nervous on rising COVID-19 cases. The way various countries are changing quarantine rules so frequently, they have more or less become like stock indices to be kept track of on regular basis. In the most recent development, Switzerland has amended its list of countries at risk from high rates of infection with the new coronavirus. List now covers all nations outside Europe’s passport-free Schengen zone barring a score of exceptions. The new list has some notable exceptions though, including Australia, Ireland, Japan, Canada, South Korea and New Zealand, although Australia and Japan are themselves facing a resurgence of novel coronavirus in their respective countries. The Swiss move, which aims to curb the spread of the COVID-19, takes effect on Saturday. ...
Read MoreWith fear of another wave of coronavirus resurfacing, Thailand has delayed plans for a “travel bubble” agreement with select countries. New daily coronavirus cases are rising in parts of Asia, putting pressure on its vital tourism industry and complicating efforts to revive its battered economy. Thailand first proposed the idea in June to allow movement between select countries that have low infection numbers, without the need for travellers to undergo quarantine. But that has been shelved, officials said, amid second and third waves in East Asian countries that previously had their outbreaks under control. “We are delaying discussion of travel bubble arrangements for now given the outbreak situation in other countries,” Thailand’s coronavirus taskforce spokesman, Taweesin Wisanuyot...
