Christmas movie locations you can stay in

Travellers looking to immerse themselves in a festive atmosphere are being told of Christmas movie locations around the world where they can stay in.

Experts at Online-Bedrooms.co.uk have named six charming destinations featured in popular Christmas movies that offer travellers the ultimate festive experience. The locations range from ski resorts and cosy villages to iconic city hotels seen in famous films such as Chalet Girl, The Holiday and Home Alone 2.

They’re ideal for film lovers and festive travellers planning a winter getaway to get in the Christmas spirit.

Cat Wiltshire from Online-Bedrooms.co.uk said: “With Christmas on the way, many of us love to get cosy with a heartwarming Christmas movie but what better way to enhance that experience than by visiting the actual locations where these beloved movies were filmed?

“Our suggested destinations not only allow travellers to explore festive landscapes and iconic backdrops, but they also offer opportunities to stay overnight for the ultimate experience. Fans can get lost in New York Kevin McCallister-style by staying at the famous Plaza Hotel or head for a wholesome getaway in the English countryside just like Amanda in The Holiday.

“Staying in these magical locations not only brings the movies to life but also allows you to create lasting holiday memories with your loved ones.”

The team at Online-Bedrooms.co.uk have named 6 Christmas movie locations you can stay in:

1. Home Alone 2 (1992): Plaza Hotel in New York, US

Home Alone movies are undoubtedly among the most popular Christmas movies ever made. The iconic Plaza Hotel, where Kevin McAllister finds himself on his solo adventure in New York, offers a Home Alone Special Package which includes a limousine tour with a large cheese pizza and a decadent ice cream sundae delivered right to your extra large bed.

2. Chalet Girl (2011): St. Anton am Arlberg ski resort in Austria

Travellers can visit the St. Anton am Arlberg picturesque ski resort in Austria and immerse themselves in the world of Chalet Girl. This destination is perfect for travellers who want to enjoy world-class skiing and wintery landscapes while staying in charming chalets.

3. Princess Switch 2 (2020) and 3 (2021): Hopetoun House in Scotland

The Hopetoun House and its grounds in Scotland served as filming locations for the second and third films in the Princess Switch trilogy. Various scenes were shot at this stately home, which represents Montenaro Castle in the movies. While you can’t spend a night at the House, there is holiday accommodation available on the Estate next to Deer Park.

4. The Holiday (2006): Shere village in Surrey, England

The Holiday is a real Christmas classic and many of us would love to spend Christmas in a cosy little cottage in the countryside just like Amanda did. While the beautiful cottage seen in the film was a set that was built for filming, travellers can still head for a festive getaway in the Shere village in Surrey where a lot of the filming took place. In this idyllic village, you can stay over in several cottages that inspired the Rose Hill Cottage.

5. A Royal Christmas Crush (2023): Hôtel de Glace in Canada

Hallmark Christmas movie, A Royal Christmas Crush, is set in a hotel completely made of ice. Many people are surprised to find out that the ice hotel is actually a real place in Canada where tourists stay in from January to March every year. Hôtel de Glace in Quebec is really made from snow and ice, and it contains 30 rooms, an ice slide, a chapel, a sauna and a Grand Hall.

6. How Grinch Stole Christmas (2000): Zermatt, Switzerland

Those who love the Grinch can visit the so-called real-life Whoville in Zermatt, Switzerland. The small village is nestled in a beautiful valley in the Swiss Alps at the base of the Matterhorn mountain. While Zermatt was not used as a filming location for How Grinch Stole Christmas, it’s almost a replica of Whoville, attracting millions of tourists every year.
