Raise a toast! Service 1921 wins again

Anantara Chiang Mai’s restaurant gets Wine Spectator Magazine’s 2021 Award of Excellence

The 2021 Wine Spectator Awards has recognized Anantara Chiang Mai Resort’s Service 1921 Restaurant and Bar’s diversity and sophistication of their cellar collection by winning the 2021 Award of Excellence. These prestigious awards acknowledge the best destinations from around the world for wine aficionados and self-confessed oenophiles seeking an elevated wine experience.

Spy themed The Service 1921 Restaurant and Bar continues to delight diners and wine connoisseurs from around the world by winning its fifth consecutive Wine Spectator Magazine Award of Excellence.

Applicants for these prestigious awards are asked to present a complete wine list, including vintages, appellations, and full producer names. This award is presented to restaurants with well-selected lists that not only highlight quality producers but also fit with the restaurant’s menu and theme in terms of price and style.

Designed for a tropical climate with spacious verandas to catch the breeze off the Ping River, Anantara Chiang Mai Resort’s splendid Service 1921 Restaurant and Bar was built in 1915 and opened in 1921 as the British Consulate. The house was the former home of the consul’s family and housed a courtroom, offices, servants’ quarters and stables for elephants. Welcoming a constant stream of visitors, British citizens in Chiang Mai came to pay their respects, register their presence, or seek help and advice. Drinks and meals were served in the consulate’s dining room, many a game of croquet was played on the lawn, and parties for the British King or Queen’s birthdays were social highlights of the year.

The Service 1921 reimagines this heritage with a fictitious illusion of the British government’s secret intelligence service. Social and private spaces range from communal dining salons, an elegant bar with a plush lounge and al fresco seating on the wrap-around lower and upper verandas, to the award-winning wine cellar for connoisseur journeys and a private dining room accessed through a secret book shelf door in the library wall.

“To win this award for five consecutive years is a clear testament to our passion for giving our guests the best experiences while they stay with us at Anantara Chiang Mai,” said General Manager, Syahreza Ishwara. “It not only is an honour to be recognised by such a prestigious international award but it continues to showcase the great teamwork and genuine hospitality of Northern Thailand to the whole world.”

From its humble beginnings in 1976 as a tasting notes bulletin, Wine Spectator has grown to be one of the most coveted publications for the wine connoisseur, offering tips on not only wine, but also food, travel, and beverage industry news.  This year 1,673 restaurants worldwide earned the Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator’s acknowledging each fine establishments’ commitment to a quality wine program.
