IndiGo starts Kochi-Male flights under air bubble pact

IndiGo said it has started flights on the Kochi-Male route from Thursday under the bilateral air bubble arrangement between India and Maldives. Under an air bubble pact, airlines of both the countries operate special international passenger flights with certain restrictions. "IndiGo commenced two weekly flights between India and Maldives under an air bubble from today," the airline said in a press release. It said the flights on Kochi-Male route will operate on Thursday and Sunday. International passengers need to book with airlines directly

Passengers taking international flights from India need not apply to the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) and can directly book their tickets with the airlines, said an official statement on Wednesday. A standard operating protocol issued by the Home Ministry on August 22 stated that persons who are eligible to travel on outbound flights “will apply to MoCA or an agency/agencies designated by MoCA for this purpose with necessary details, including places of departure & arrival”. India on Thursday signed an air bubble agreement with the Maldives, making it the sixth country in a growing list of places where Indians can travel to. The first flight to Male will leave from here on August 18. The Maldives is the first neighbouring country with which India has operationalized the air bubble. The step will help in the movement of people from both sides for employment, tourism, medical emergencies etc. An air bubble between countries allows citizens to travel freely between specified nations without having the need to undergo on-arrival quarantine. Air India has announced that it will stop flights to at least 5 European destinations due to of a drop in passenger demand for these destinations. The national carrier is citing that these routes are no longer financially viable because of the effects of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. On the chopping block are the cities of Madrid, Milan, Copenhagen, Vienna, and Stockholm with immediate effect.
