This dramatic decline may underlie present-day conflicts between elephants and people, the authors argue. Developing new insights from a unique data set that models land-use change over 13 centuries, a research team led by new UC San Diego faculty member Shermin de Silva found that habitats suitable for Asian elephants have been cut by nearly two-thirds within the past 300 years....

The pioneering elephant welfare charity, The Human Elephant Learning Programs Foundation (H-ELP), is partnering with the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation (GTAEF) to launch a global service that stars elephants in Zoom video calls live from their natural habitat in Northern Thailand’s ancient jungle. Rates start from US$ 75 to bring elephants in on a Zoom video call for ten minutes. For US$ 145 callers also get a two-minute introduction to their three-ton video call companions and a three-minute question and answer session conducted by one of the GTAEF’s elephant experts. Securing Thirunelli-Kudrakote elephant corridor was first project of its kind

On the eve of the World Elephant Day, Wildlife Trust of India released their Conservation Action Report on securing the Thirunelli – Kudrakote elephant corridor. The Thirunelli – Kudrakote Elephant corridor connects the Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary, Karnataka with the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, Kerala and connects a much larger wildlife habitat extending from Bannerghata, Karnataka to Wayanad Sanctuary. WTI’s data shows that pre-relocation of these families, 100% of the corridor resident families faced regular conflicts with wildlife (elephant, wild pig, deer and bonnet macaque). Over 90% of the relocated families agreed that the new locations were largely free from wild animal encounters and attacks and had better access to roads, schools, hospitals and ancillary facilities.
