The 210-km Manali-Sarchu road was re-opened by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) on Saturday, the defence ministry said. It said the opening of the road will provide connectivity to Lahaul district in Himachal Pradesh and it further leads to Leh in Ladakh. Sarchu is of great importance mainly due to its location on the Leh-Manali highway. The road remains closed for over 160-180 days in a year during the winters. Sarchu is located on the boundary between Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh. It is situated between Baralacha La to the south and Lachulung La to the north, at an altitude of 4,290 m (14,070 ft).
