Park rangers enter fray in West Africa’s battle with militants

When a dozen suspected Islamist militants from a neighbouring country were spotted riding motorcycles through the W National Park in northern Benin armed with AK-47 assault rifles, park rangers snapped into action. From an operations room at their base, the park director and two senior ranger officers sent anti-poaching units to pursue the men who eventually fled into Nigeria, according to a confidential incident report reviewed by Reuters. They also directed Benin's army and police where to position their forces and deployed an airplane and helicopter belonging to the park as part of a broader operation to surveil and "neutralise" the target, the undated park report said. Conservation outlook of Western Ghats grim, says report

India's iconic Western Ghats, inscribed by UNESCO in 2012 as a natural world heritage site, is threatened by population pressure, urbanisation and climate change, according to a new report by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The IUCN World Heritage Outlook 3, published last week, builds on previous reports from 2014 and 2017 to track whether the conservation of the world’s 252 natural world heritage sites is sufficient to protect them in the long term. According to the 2020 report, the conservation outlook of the mountain chain of the Western Ghats, one of the worlds eight hottest hot spots of biological diversity, is of significant concern. Sixteen years after pioneering a deep dive into whale shark conservation, Wildlife Trust of India and their partner Tata Chemicals Limited have much to celebrate with the Gujarat Forest Department and the fishing community along the coast of this maritime state. Whale shark, the world’s largest fish is endangered and the first species of fish to enjoy protection at par to that of the tigers, lions and elephants in India.
