‘Vaccinations first’, CDC to cruise ship industry

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention on Friday issued new guidance to the cruise ship industry, including the need for COVID-19 vaccinations, a necessary step before passenger voyages can resume. The new technical instructions, the first update since October, include increasing from weekly to daily reporting frequency of COVID-19 cases and illnesses and implementing routine testing of all crew based on a ship’s COVID-19 status and establishing a plan and timeline for vaccination of crew and port personnel. “COVID-19 vaccination efforts will be critical in the safe resumption of passenger operations,” the CDC said. Royal Caribbean sees uptick in future bookings

Royal Caribbean Group said on Monday it was seeing an uptick in future bookings, following a disastrous year for the cruise operator, as travel enthusiasts look to sail again at a time governments globally have started mass vaccinations. The company’s shares, down 44% last year, soared 9% in morning trading, as Royal Caribbean said it recorded a 30% increase in new bookings since the beginning of the year when compared to November and December. Analysts have also tipped Royal Caribbean and its peers Carnival Corp and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd to resume voyages gradually in the back half of this year, after the pandemic-triggered months-long halt. Almost two weeks after announcing reduction of 13 ships in its fleet, World’s biggest cruise company Carnival has, in an attempt to soothe the nerves, announced new plans for its fleet. It expects this to generate tremendous guest excitement once it resumes sailing. Cruise line now has a confirmed date for an additional Excel-class, LNG-powered ship arriving in November 2022. Announcement also includes information on four ships either sold or put on long term lay-up status, and other ships redeployed to new homeports. Carnival seeks to leverage its strong network of year-round and seasonal homeports in the US with upgraded offerings. Actually, the whole chaos of the pandemic started in a very bad omen for cruise sector when Carnival’s Diamond Princess Cruise ship becoming the earliest hotspots for the disease outside China.
