Domestic tourism leads Indian travel sector’s recovery

The data shows that whilst domestic tourism is driving the recovery of the sector in India, international travel spend remains below pre-pandemic levels. According to the global tourism body’s latest research, the sector’s contribution to India’s GDP reached just over INR 19.13TN in 2023 – almost 10% ahead of 2019 levels. The World Travel & Tourism Council’s (WTTC) 2023 Economic Impact Research (EIR) has revealed that India’s Travel & Tourism sector is in strong recovery and will be within touching distance of the pre-pandemic peak this year. Speaking to Ministers at the G20 Summit in India, Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO, highlighted the sector’s resilience, growing at twice the rate of GDP not only in India, but across all G20 nations. The sector is set to contribute $2.24TN to the U.S. economy this year, surpassing the 2019 pre-pandemic high of $2.17TN.
