New UNWTO report to support climate action in the tourism sector UNWTO has released a new report highlighting the progress that global tourism has made in measuring greenhouse gas emissions as well as the challenges the sector still faces. As more and more organizations make commitments through the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism and engage in measurement towards target setting and decarbonization, it will become increasingly important that the tourism sector reaches consensus over how it approaches measurement, and that the methodologies and tools are in place to facilitate the rapid and urgent acceleration of engagement. These tools will be needed to engage and mobilize the sector, but also to track its essential progress towards the commitments it has made for 20...

More than 100 environmental activists wearing white suits stormed into an area where private jets are kept at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport on Saturday and stopped several aircraft from departing by sitting in front of their wheels. The protest was part of a day of demonstrations in and around the airport organised by environmental groups Greenpeace and Extinction Rebellion to protest over greenhouse gas emissions and other pollution caused by the airport and aviation industry. The textile industry has a large carbon footprint, something fashion giants are under increasing pressure to address as shoppers become more aware of the environmental impact of clothes and as global temperatures rise. The Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel (HKRITA) has developed an amine-containing solution with which to treat cotton - fibre, yarn or fabric - making the cotton pull carbon dioxide gas towards it and capture it, to thereafter stabilise and store it on the surface of the textile. The Arctic Report Card 2021 report, published this month by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), describes how the North American beaver (Castor canadensis) has expanded its range in recent years and is now colonising Arctic territory. Read MoreArctic warming cascades through ocean and over land Greenhouse gas emissions reached a new high last year, putting the world on track for an average temperature rise of 3 degrees Celsius, a U.N. report showed on Wednesday. The report by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) - the latest to suggest the world is hurtling toward extreme climate change - follows a year of sobering weather extremes, including rapid ice loss in the Arctic as well as record heat waves and wildfires in Siberia and the U.S. West. On Monday, researchers at Europe’s Copernicus Climate Change Service said last month was the hottest-ever November on record. Meanwhile, The Arctic region has had its second-warmest year since 1900, continuing a pattern of extreme heat, ice melt and environmental transf...
