K2 conqueror Andrzej Bargiel has become the first person to climb the towering 6,178m Yawash Sar II peak in Pakistan before skiing down. The ski mountaineer summited K2 in 2018 without oxygen and skied from peak to base without removing his skis – a seemingly impossible challenge which had never been completed before. In 2018, a Polish expedition also set out for Yawash Sar II to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Polish independence by reaching the summit but plans were thwarted by avalanche conditions. This time, Bargiel and his Karakoram Ski Expedition team (with partner Jędrzej Baranowski , Darek Załuski, Kuba Gzela and Bartłomiej Pawlikowski) set off into the Karakoram mountain range 10 days before making history.

The streets of the little Alpine town that welcomed around 3,000 business chiefs, political thinkers and state leaders for last year’s annual meeting lie deserted. Discussions have moved online, starting Monday, and COVID-19 restrictions are also keeping regular tourists away. Read MoreFrench ski lifts will not reopen on February 1 and it is not clear for now whether French people can start booking winter holidays in February, French Tourism Minister Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne said on Thursday. French ski resorts can welcome tourists but the lifts have not been allowed to open since the start of the season. With no mechanical means to lift them up the slopes, skiers and snowboarders have resort to trudging up the slopes with snow shoes. Read MoreVive la difference: COVID rules divide adjacent French and Swiss ski resorts Like other French ski resorts, the Alpine town of Chatel has been forced to close its lifts over the Christmas period as part of tougher government curbs to contain the coronavirus. But just 5 km (3 miles) away, holidaymakers are schussing down the same slopes on the other side of the border in Switzerland, where less strict restrictions mean it’s business as usual in the Dents du Midi ski region. Read MoreGermany wants Alpine countries to keep ski resorts closed to help fight the coronavirus pandemic, but reaching an agreement with neighbouring Austria is proving difficult, Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday. “The ski season is approaching. We will be trying to coordinate in Europe whether we could close all ski resorts,” Merkel told parliament, adding that this might not be possible given resistance from Austria, but Germany would try again. In the first wave of the coronavirus at the start of the year, many Germans were infected at the Austrian ski resort of Ischgl. Germany last month issued travel warnings for popular ski regions in Austria, Italy and Switzerland. Interestingly, in September this year a consumer rights group had taken a legal action against the Austr...
