Badrinath to reopen for devotees on May 18

The sacred portals of Badrinath will be reopened for devotees on May 18 this year. The gates of the famous Himalayan temple located in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district are closed every year with the onset of winter during which it remains snowbound. The temple will be reopened for devotees at 4.15 am on May 18, a Chardham Devasthanam Board official said. The auspicious hour and date for the reopening of the Himalayan temple was decided at a ceremony held on the occasion of Basant Panchami on Tuesday at Narendra Nagar palace, the residence of the erstwhile Tehri royals, he said. At 125 labourers working at the Rishiganga power project are missing after a portion of Nanda Devi glacier broke off in Tapovan area of Joshimath in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district on Sunday morning and damaged the Rishiganga dam on Alaknanda river. After the incident, experts have once again started questioning rampant construction of hydro-power projects on the various tributaries of Ganges in the region. The water level in the Dhauli Ganga river surged up once again on Sunday night under the impact of the glacial burst during the day, creating panic among people living in the area. At least 150 workers are feared missing after a portion of Nanda Devi glacier broke off in Tapovan area of Joshimath in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district on Sunday morning and damaged the Rishiganga dam on Alaknanda river. Putting this camera to some tough task, I have taken it for rafting on Ganges. Task was to test on many things. The chardham yatra came to an end on Thursday with the closure of the portals of Badrinath temple in the Garhwal Himalayas for the winter season. The temple gates were closed at 3.35 pm after an elaborate ritual performed by chief priest of the temple Ishwari Prasad Namboodri. The closure of the Badrinath temple marks the conclusion of this year's chardham yatra, which had started late due to the coronavirus outbreak. The remaining three Himalayan temples of Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri have already been closed. Badrinath temple was opened on 15th May. A day after portals of Gangotri were closed for the winters, the sacred portals of the Himalayan shrine of Kedarnath were also closed for the winter season on Monday amid a fresh spell of snowfall. The gates of the temple, which houses one of the 11 jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and attracts devotees from across the world, were closed at 8:30 am after an elaborate ceremony. The temple priest also performed a 'Samadhi Puja' of Lord Shiva.
