Rupsi Airport in Assam to be operational from Saturday

Rupsi Airport in Assam's Dhubri district is poised to be operational from Saturday with a trial flight conducted on the Guwahati-Rupsi-Guwahati route by Flybig Airlines, an Airports Authority of India (AAI) official said on Thursday. The trial run was completed timely and safely on Wednesday with extended support from the Assam Government and concerned agencies, the AAI official said. The airport has been developed under the RCS-UDAN scheme and operations by Flybig Airlines are scheduled to start from Saturday between Guwahati-Rupsi-Kolkata route. Kaziranga records 175 percent rise in number of waterfowls

Altogether 93,491 birds of 112 species were recorded during the two-day annual waterfowl census in the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve in Assam, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), Amit Sahai, said on Tuesday. The total number of birds has increased from 34,284 in 2020 to 93,491 in 2021, implying a rise of 175 per cent, Sahai said. This rise in the number of birds visiting Kaziranga can be attributed to improved habitat management and water conservation measures carried out by the Kaziranga Tiger Reserve authority. More than 64,000 tourists have visited the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, famed for the one-horned Indian rhinoceros, since it reopened on October 21, an official said. The park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site, usually remains closed between June and September because of the annual floods and reopens in November. The park's Field Director P Sivakumar said that 64,100 tourists visited since October 21,2020 while the revenue collected during the 70-day period was Rs 127.32 lakh. In 2018-19, over 47,10,971 domestic tourists and 25,739 foreign tourists had visited the state. The Kaziranga National Park (KNP), famed for one-horned rhinoceros, was opened to tourists on Wednesday, after being closed for seven months due to COVID-19 pandemic. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal formally reopened the KNP and expressed hope that this will revive the states tourism sector which has been severely hit by the pandemic. The KNP remains shut for around five months every year since April-end during the monsoon season when floods also occur in the state.
