Rhino population jumps by 200 at Kaziranga

The population of one-horned rhinoceros at the Kaziranga National Park has registered an increase of 200, taking the total to 2,613, an official said on Tuesday. The four-day rhino census recorded 903 females, 750 males and 170 of undetermined sex in the adult category of above six years. In the sub-adult category of three to six years, 146 females, 116 males and 103 whose sex could not be determined were found. The park's director Jatindra Sarma said 279 rhinos in the juvenile category (one to three years) and 146 calves (less than one year) were also recorded. During the last census in 2018, 2,413 rhinos were recorded. The census was conducted from March 25 to 28, the official said. Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary reopens for tourists

The Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary (PWS) in Assam, famed for the one-horned Great Indian Rhinoceros, reopened for tourists from Friday after remaining shut during the monsoon season. Minister and local MLA Piyus Hazarika, who declared it open, and his wife Aimee Baruah took a tour of the sanctuary with jeep and elephant safaris. Roads inside the wildlife park in central Morigaon district, which were damaged due to floods this year, were repaired before reopening, PWS officials said. The 38.85 square km sanctuary has over 100 Great Indian Rhinoceros within a 16 sq km area found suitable for habitation, they said. The Kaziranga National Park (KNP), famed for one-horned rhinoceros, was opened to tourists on Wednesday, after being closed for seven months due to COVID-19 pandemic. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal formally reopened the KNP and expressed hope that this will revive the states tourism sector which has been severely hit by the pandemic. The KNP remains shut for around five months every year since April-end during the monsoon season when floods also occur in the state. The Park was closed in March this year after the government imposed lockdown.
