Europe’s best beach for 2026 has been revealed, with Montenegro’s Mogren Beach taking the top spot and outranking the continent’s more established holiday hotspots like Spain, Greece and Italy.

Travel insurance experts at Quotezone.co.uk have created the 2026 European Beach Index to help travellers find good quality, affordable beach holiday destinations this summer.

The index looked at ten beaches across popular European holiday destinations, ranking them based on factors such as sea and air temperature, 5-star reviews, costs for accommodation and drinks in the area, and the distance from the closest airport.

Mogren Beach in Montenegro has been named the best beach in Europe for 2026, admired for its dramatic Adriatic coastline, hot summer temperatures and hidden-gem appeal compared to many of the better-known destinations.

Ranked on basis of affordable beauty

Montenegro also stands out for its affordability, offering some of the lowest overall costs. A three-day stay in Budva, the area surrounding Mogren Beach, averages just under £195, while a draft beer can be found for less than £1.50.

Nissi Beach in Cyprus, which previously topped the ranking, takes second place this year, continuing to score highly for its turquoise waters and exceptionally warm conditions, with sea temperatures averaging over 27°C in summer and air temperatures reaching close to 29°C.

While the destination remains a firm favourite with holidaymakers thanks to its lively resort atmosphere and golden sands, higher costs – averaging £318.85 for a three-day stay – sees it rank behind Montenegro.

Third on the list is Playa de Maspalomas in Gran Canaria, Spain, which stands out for its strong review scores and reliable year-round sunshine. The destination records over 5,000 five-star reviews, and average July air temperatures of 27.8°C.

Bulgaria’s Irakli Beach places fourth, offering one of the most budget-friendly beach experiences in the index. A three-day stay in the local area averages just over £216, while a draft beer costs just £0.88 – the cheapest in the ranking.

What’s notable is that several of Europe’s most popular beach destinations sit in the middle of the index.

Greece’s Elafonissi Beach ranks fifth, followed by Portugal’s Praia da Falésia in sixth, Croatia’s Zlatni Rat in seventh and Italy’s La Pelosa Beach in eighth – all with iconic scenery and strong visitor appeal, but each edged down the list by factors such as cost and overall value.

Many Brits still opt for seaside staycations, with Bournemouth Beach remaining a popular choice for UK holidaymakers.

While Bournemouth Beach offers scenic coastal views and a classic pier packed with family-friendly attractions, cooler average sea and air temperatures of 17.2°C and 17.5°C respectively place it ninth on the list.

Last in the ranking is France’s Plage de Palombaggia in Corsica, mainly due to high drink and accommodation costs, with a hotel for three days during the busy season costing travellers a whopping £603.

Europe offers incredible variety

Helen Rolph, travel insurance expert at Quotezone.co.uk said: “Europe offers an incredible variety of beach destinations, but travellers are increasingly looking for places that balance great weather, beautiful scenery and good value for money.

“Our 2026 European Beach Index compares ten of the continent’s most popular beaches across key holiday factors, including temperature, visitor reviews, local costs and how easy they are to reach.

“This year’s results show Montenegro leading the way, with Mogren Beach outperforming many of Europe’s more established destinations thanks to its warm conditions, striking Adriatic coastline and some of the lowest overall costs.

“Cyprus and Spain continue to perform strongly with consistently high temperatures and excellent visitor ratings, but higher demand and holiday costs mean they sit just behind Montenegro in this year’s index. In many cases, popularity could be pushing up prices, making them less desirable for a budget-friendly trip.

“As travellers finalise their summer holiday plans, we recommend looking beyond the most obvious hotspots, as some of Europe’s lesser-known destinations may be offering some of the best all-round beach experiences.”
